Endpoint protection is one of those topics where vendors use a flood of acronyms and administrators are left wondering what they actually need. Here are straightforward answers to questions we hear often from nursing home, assisted living and clinic leaders.
An endpoint is any device that connects to your network and can run software: desktops, laptops, servers, tablets and smartphones. Some organizations also include devices like kiosks and specialized medical workstations.
Traditional antivirus compares files against a list of known threats. It still catches a lot, but modern attacks often use techniques that do not rely on obvious malicious files, such as stolen credentials, legitimate administration tools and scripts that run in memory. For that reason, many organizations now use endpoint detection and response, usually abbreviated EDR.
EDR tools continuously monitor what a device is doing, such as which programs launch, what they change and which network connections they make. They look for suspicious behavior, can isolate an infected computer from the network and keep records that help investigators understand what happened. Many include next-generation antivirus capabilities as well.
Managed detection and response adds people. A security team monitors alerts around the clock, investigates and responds. For small organizations without a full-time security analyst, this is often the more realistic way to benefit from EDR, since the best tool in the world does little if nobody looks at its alerts at 2 a.m.
Yes. Servers hold the most valuable data and are prime targets. Make sure your protection is installed and supported on server operating systems, and that exclusions needed for databases or EHR applications are configured carefully according to vendor guidance.
Yes, though the form differs. Macs benefit from endpoint protection and encryption. Phones and tablets are better protected through mobile device management, passcodes, encryption, updates and, in some cases, mobile threat defense. No platform is immune.
Devices running unsupported operating systems cannot be adequately protected by antivirus alone, because new vulnerabilities will not be fixed. The best answer is replacement. If a device must remain, for example because it controls specialized equipment, isolate it on a separate network segment, restrict what it can reach and monitor it closely.
Use a central console that shows every protected device
Check for devices that have not reported in recently
Review reports of detections and actions taken
Test deployment on new computers as part of setup
Ask your provider for periodic summaries
A protected device count lower than your inventory reveals gaps.
Modern tools are designed to be light, but older hardware may struggle. Slowdowns are more often caused by poor configuration, such as overly aggressive scanning during work hours. Your provider can tune scan schedules and exclusions.
No. Endpoint protection is one layer. Patching removes the weaknesses attackers look for, training reduces risky clicks, and backups let you recover if prevention fails.
Does the product include behavioral detection and the ability to isolate a device?
Who monitors alerts, and when?
Can it protect servers and the operating systems we use?
How are updates delivered, and what happens when a device is offline?
What reporting do we receive?
Is there an additional cost for incident response help?
The Security Rule requires protection from malicious software as part of its administrative safeguards, specifically in security awareness and training, and expects technical safeguards appropriate to your risks. It does not name specific products.
UnityCare IT deploys and manages endpoint protection for healthcare organizations, with monitoring that does not depend on your staff watching a console. If you are comparing options or are unsure whether your current tool is doing its job, we can review it with you.
